THIS
WEEK IN NORTH
AMERICAN DIPLOMACY Buz Eddy
2007 HUSKY CON
The 2007 HuskyCon was held at the Woodring home
at Setauket New York overlooking Long Island Sound. This is a NADF Grand Prix tournament, but
more than that it is a truly enjoyable hosted week-end of Diplomacy gaming in
a party like atmosphere. The week
before David Maletsky had disappointing results in Vancouver. Playing under
the lead based system he designed for Carnage, Maletsky won the event
finished with two firsts and a second.
Emmanuel du Pontavice, of France,
on his way home from WDC in Vancouver placed second, Chris Mann of
NYC was third.
The format for the
event is Diplomacy Fri night and Saturday morning, then open gaming time
until Sunday morning. There is a ping pong table sized board with
butter cube sized blocks in the basement. The were 14 players standing around the
table playing two gunboat games one with the large blocks and the other with
standard blocks. David Norman served
as gamemaster. At the end he ran a
contest where the players were asked to try to identify who was playing which
positions. Melissa Call turned in a
sheet with 12 right answers. Norman tacked on a -10 point penalty because she
asked each player what they played. Graham Woodring
directed and had to play two positions in the Saturday morning round to make
it all work. He didn’t make it easy either, one was downstairs on the big
board, and the other upstairs. Don and
Christine Woodring continue as the
gracious host of the event. Conrad
came in from Istanbul, Turkey where he is currently working. 2007 CONQUEST Ron Bracken
soloed as Turkey to win the 2007 Conquest played Labor Day week-end at the Marriott in Burlingame CA. Siobhan Granvold placed 2nd and Andy Hull was
third. Another solo was posted by TD Edi Birsan, but he placed himself last. The Burlingame
events, (KublaCon and Conquest) have mentor rounds Friday night designed to
introduce the game to convention attendees. There were six players
participating in the 14 player mentor round that did not play in the three
round main event. Twenty-six players participated in the three rounds of the
main event. 2007 ALL-STAR VOTING
OPENS The NADF election process occurs in two
phases. The 1st phase is
the public voting. Candidates are the
top seven non-All Stars having the highest NADF rating during the year. (Any other player matching or exceeding the
7th high NADF rating is added to the list.) Anyone that has played a rated game in 2007
in North America may vote for one or more of the candidates. The public
voting process closes Dec. 20. The public voting creates a list. From those participating in the public
voting a panel of electors is chosen. The panel members each submit a yes or
no vote on the 1st named candidate, if yes may continue on until
they have voted no once. A majority of
elector yes votes confers the title. 2007 NADF ALL-STAR
CANDIDATES Adam Silverman Jake Mannix David Maletsky Yann Clouet Dan Lester Eric Mead Jim O’Kelley VOTE FOR NONE OR MORE OF THE ABOVE Please
